BOOK ONE On a parallel earth, in the city of Bastul, Colonel Adair Lorus disappears while investigating the death of an informant, triggering a series of events which will tear his family apart and set in motion the resolution of an ancient struggle. If you're looking for sci-fi with shades of grey, so not read this series! Unfortunately, there seems to be this assumption (for lack of a better word) that a book needs at least a sprinkle of sex in order to be good, or to sell. I get it...live, sex, etc, are a very normal part of our lives...but if I already have a normal life, why would I look for it in my escape from reality?Jason manages to weave in a brief, but lasting, love story here and there...in fact, this love story is an integral part of one of his main character's actions. He also throws in, without getting specific, a rape scene...again, necessary to a character's growth and development...but the rest of the books tell the story of a group of people, with emphasis on one character...however, this one character is extremely closely tied to the other main characters...
And, let's not forget a driving character who pops in and out, also very closely tied to the one character!!!
Confusing?? Only because I'm not naming names...
Definitely a series with reading...you have action...tons of it...with great descriptions to bring this world to life...
You have just enough romance to keep it from being solely a war book....
You have good people, who are human...complete with flaws...
You have good vs evil...
You have.........well, just read it! You won't regret it!!
Now I'm off to start the next trilogy in this series!!

I was looking for a sci-fi/fantasy type hybrid and happened upon this series because of its price. The first chapter was pretty intriguing and then the second chapter seemed a little dry to me. I am so glad I hung on until chapter 3 because it has become a great story with great characters. I really like that the heroes and heroines are not necessarily perfect and excellent at everything they do right from the start. Too often the main character(s) are the best fighters, the best strategists, etc. I was happy to see that that was not necessarily the case with all the characters. They might become great later but it seems to come legitimately.
I enjoyed that it was not overly detailed in every little aspect. Sometimes reading about the landscape or city or battle to the nth degree is boring. I want action, adventure, intrigue and a dash of romance at a fair pace. I felt the author kept the tempo going nicely. I bought this version because it has all three books in one. It was definitely worth the price for the size! I am almost done with the book and do not look forward to the wait for the next part of the story. Keep writing, Jason, because I will definitely keep reading!

General theme *SPOILERS* scattered below (no specific details given)
This fantasy adventure take place in the island grouping of the Orudan Empire and follows the Lorus family. Adair, father and governor of the town of Bastul; Maeryn, Adair's wife; Kael, their son and Saga, Kael's tutor.
A new governor is appointed after Adair goes missing...he is a cruel man who imposes himself on Maeryn and dispose both Kael and Saga (or so he thinks). All three book follow Maeryn, Kael and Saga over the ensuing 20 years or so, telling their tales of survival, development and eventual retribution.
Impressions
While the story had some great spots of intrigue, suspense, battles and travel, it also had some areas that were dragged out and became 'skim-able'. In general however, the trilogy held its own until the third book when Kael began to take on a Deus ex Machina aura. Unfortunately at this point, the once omnipotent 'bad guys' seemed to be dispatched with relative ease, their evil plans countered at every turn with inexplicable accuracy by Kael and his compatriots. The ending became a foregone conclusion and at the same time set the stage for an obvious sequel.
Also, there were several very good MAPS with interactive links embedded within the text. Oh, if only all fantasy books would have such luxuries included!
Conclusion
This was a good trilogy for a summer time beach or vacation read. It had an interesting basic plot and some intriguing developments. I think many readers will absolutely love this tale, because it's easy to read and it did have some great moments.
But to me, as each book progressed I had this uncomfortable feeling that the main characters were somehow, sacrosanct...they could be hurt or made to suffer, but you always knew in the end, they'd prevail. And yes, while I guess nearly all fantasy books end this way, it's just that the techniques used here made it quite obvious as to how things were going to turn out...and therein lies the difference between great, good and average writing. 3 1/2 Stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I purchased the combined books after reading the free download of book one.
The story line wasn't something I expected, but as I read on became enraptured with. There are elements of the book that the author could have expanded upon, but I did enjoy being given an empty slate for my own imagination to fill in the blanks of what things looked like, as far as some of the landscape and towns. Ah, yes it might have been good for him to let us know a mansion was white stucco or beige sandstone...but his writing allowed me to form some of my own picture in my head. To that I salute him.
Some authors get so rapped up in showing us, the readers the world, places explaining things. They lose me in a hundred pages of scene setting. For some books it's needed. I don't feel it was needed in this book.
I will wait now for him to get a few books ahead, as I do hate having to wait for books to come out. Because if it's good I can read most books in a few days.
